Dear Friends and Neighbors,
We are writing to you as fellow Fire Islanders. At the last Fair Harbor Community Association meeting it was announced that a new ambulance is needed. Apparently, our ambulance was bought used from Ocean Beach, and is about 14 years old. It is in bad shape due the wind and weather of Fire Island. Last year, the steering system went, and we had to depend on Saltaire, which affected response time negatively. The idea is to replace it before it fails to function in an emergency.
Given the recent beach replenishment and the upcoming firehouse renovation project, our tax bills will increase. The fire commissioners are sensitive to this, which is why they are looking for other ways to raise the necessary funds for a new ambulance.
The cost of the ambulance is estimated to be approximately $100,000. We want to raise the funds as soon as possible so that we can be in the best possible bargaining position when the time comes to make the purchase. The EMS team plans to attend the Fire/EMS Equipment show at the Nassau Coliseum this coming January.
Our initial response from the individuals we have contacted so far has been wonderful. Lucy and Phil Suarez and the Barbash family have donated considerably with a matching incentive. The Richmond (Greatneck) family has also donated generously as well as our assembly woman Ginny Fields. The members of the Fair Harbor Fire Department residing in Fair Harbor, Dunewood and Lonelyville have donated $10,000. So far we have raised $42,000. This is sensational!
We are asking owners, renters and lovers of our communities to donate as much as possible for this indispensable service. On a recent weekend, EMS took four people to Good Samaritan Hospital. We cannot afford to worry whether or not our current ambulance will start up in an emergency.
Our EMS people are great, but they can’t carry us to the hospital on
their shoulders. We need an ambulance we can count on to work 100%
of the time. To send in your tax-deductible contribution, please
fill out the form below, make your check payable to Fair Harbor Fire
District and return it to:
