Special Fire Island Safety Tips!

Finding Your House in an Emergency

It can sometimes be a challenge for us to identify the correct house in an emergency. Please help us by marking your house number on the end of the walk up to your house. Thanks!

Once you've called 911, it's helpful if you can stand on central walk to direct the first responders.

Dry Brush and Grass

Brush and dune grass around your house can be attractive but it represents a major fire hazard. We recommend you clear the ground for at least five feet around your building.

Downtown

We all enjoy the outside area around the fire house and commercial buildings, and eating outside at Le Dock.

Please be aware that in an emergency, the main route for our vehicles to leave the Fire House is to Central Walk via Broadway. In order to save life and property from a fire, every second counts.

You can help us by keeping the way clear for our vehicles to get to Broadway and along Bay Walk. In particular, please ensure that motor vehicles are out of the way, and teach children to park their bicycles to the side of the main walk.

Outdoor Showers

We love our outdoor showers here!

But did you know that a magnifying shaving mirror hanging in the shower can focus the sun's rays like a magnifying glass?

Recent fires in Fair Harbor have been associated with such mirrors.

DO NOT place magnifying shaving mirrors in your outdoor shower - use a regular mirror instead - they pose no danger.
